In My Father’s Lane - Chasing 2:15

What if your father’s Olympic record was more than a number – it was your last chance to connect?

Adam Wilkie lost his father, British swimming legend David Wilkie MBE, to cancer in 2024.

Now, 50 years after one of the greatest swims in Olympic history, Adam is stepping into his father’s lane not as an elite athlete, but as a son trying to understand the man he lost far too soon.

This is his attempt to match his father’s record-breaking swim of 2:15.11, and raise £215,000 for SportsAid the charity that supported his dad on the way to Olympic glory.

The Challenge

At 33, Adam Wilkie, son of legendary British swimmer David Wilkie MBE, embarks on an audacious, deeply personal quest: to match his late father’s Olympic gold-medal-winning 200m breaststroke time of 2:15.11 – 50 years after it made history at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

With everything on the line, Adam dives into a year-long journey of grief, grit, and self-discovery – retracing his father’s footsteps as he chases a legacy and the hope of healing, one stroke at a time.

With the full backing of Aquatics GB, Adam will gain access to world-class coaching, cutting-edge sports science, and even the hallowed lanes of Britain’s elite performance centres.

We’ll step behind the curtain to see the dedication, expertise and support that’s poured into every split second of performance. But Adam’s journey goes further. He’ll seek out his father’s former teammates, rivals, and coaches – while learning from today’s top swimmers – to understand what it really takes to reach the top.

The year clock starts at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships on 18 April 2026. Adam will attempt to match his father’s time a year later in April 2027.

A British Swimming Legend

David Wilkie was one of Britain’s greatest Olympians. In 1976, he ended a 68-year wait for a British men’s Olympic swimming gold by winning the 200m breaststroke in a world-record time of 2:15.11.

He shattered the previous record by more than three seconds and sparked a golden era of British breaststroke, paving the way for generations of swimmers.

By the time he retired at just 22, he had set five world records and held British, European, Commonwealth, American, and Olympic titles simultaneously – a feat unmatched before or since.

“This isn’t just about a time on a clock. It’s about getting closer to the man I lost too soon.”

About Adam

A man with crossed arms standing in front of an indoor swimming pool with swimmers practicing laps.

Adam was born in 1993. He didn’t grow up as a swimmer. Ironically, he was once terrified of deep water. The son of one of Britain’s greatest Olympians couldn’t bring himself to swim past the shallow end. When he eventually took to the swimming pool at school, he showed flashes of talent, but swimming always felt like someone else’s story. By the time he left school, he hung up his goggles for good.

He turned his energy elsewhere – going to university and building a decade-long career in brand strategy.

In 2024, after his father passed away, Adam returned to the pool for the first time in over a decade. What started as a way to process grief quickly became something deeper: a search for connection, for understanding, and for identity. In the pool's stillness, he found a way to hold onto his father.

Now, Adam is stepping into uncharted territory once again. Leaving behind a successful corporate career, he is retracing his father’s footsteps – not just to chase a time, but to pay tribute to his dad and the enduring bond between father and son.
